With kids, it reveals itself differently: there are huge tree-shaded parks tucked into the northern suburbs, world-class museums (some genuinely free), an unbroken belt of family farms within an hour's drive in any direction, and indoor play centres at almost every shopping mall — invaluable when the Highveld thunderstorm rolls in at 2pm.
